Sam and I spent Christmas in the Palm Springs area with his family. I’ve got lots of photos from the trip, and I’m going to post some over the next few days. These are from our visit to the Salton Sea. I didn’t know anything about it when we went, but it’s a very interesting place. There has been an inland sea here on and off for thousands of years – the last time it was filled to it’s current level was when an irrigation canal was breached in the 1900’s.

When we started walking across the beach towards the water, I realized that what we were walking on was not sand at all. It was all dead barnacle shells and fish bones, piled up to form the beach. When we went into the visitor center, they told us that there are regular toxic algae blooms in the sea, which kill the barnacles and force the tilapia up onto the shore, where the die en masse. It was a very surreal environment.
